Gill Westcott said: “I am very proud of raising the Green Party vote in Central Devon from 6% to 8% of the vote – 3,338 voted Green, and many others would have liked to if they hadn’t felt impelled to vote tactically. Incidentally, I am getting many comments from people who think that, had Labour allowed the candidate chosen by the local Labour Party to stand, instead of a parachuted-in choice, that candidate would have won.
‘Greens favour decentralisation and local democracy! Local Green Parties choose their candidates – end of!. We also push for Proportional Representation, for a voting system that makes all votes count, doesn’t end with a candidate being elected on a minority of the votes, and makes the number of MP’s reflect the number of votes for each party. That’s fair, and that’s what we don’t have at the moment.”
